Literary Fiction Author Honored as a Finalist in International Book Contest
Mother Blues by Owen Thomas is recognized as a top 2022 book award finalist in a competition that celebrates excellence in books all around the world.

Mother Blues is a groundbreaking work of literary fiction by prolific author, Owen Thomas. In a hauntingly beautiful narrative, the book centers on the maternal relationships we never knew existed, the evil we never expected, and the redemption we never thought possible. Mother Blues was named a Finalist in the Fiction category of the 2022 Book Excellence Awards, an international book award competition that recognizes books for excellence in writing, design and overall market appeal.

The “Book Excellence Awards has a long-standing, proven track record for recognizing and promoting quality independent fiction…I am thrilled that Mother Blues has been recognized as a Finalist this year,” said author Owen Thomas. A multi-talented artist, Thomas was inspired to write Mother Blues to pay tribute to motherhood, offering a fresh exploration of its role and influence as a whole. “I wanted to write a novel about the maternal presence that pervades our lives, informing our past and shaping our future; a presence found not exclusively in mothers, or even women, but a living force that transcends gender and even death. Secondly, I wanted to write a novel that exalts that most quintessential of American art forms: the Blues.”

Mother Blues follows the calamitous life of Davis Payne, a troubled man whose life has been defined by trauma, loss and death. As Hurricane Harvey submerges Houston, Davis escapes to the small desert town of Corbin, Texas, in hopes of escaping a life of guilt, and a childhood haunted by death. When Davis was ten, his mother drowned saving him from a boating accident. Years later, his first love burned to death before he could reach her. Davis soon finds his life inextricably tangled with the lives of others fighting to keep their own heads above water, for Corbin was not the quiet refuge he expected. Beneath its dry, dusty surface, Davis finds a town rife with terrible secrets, restless legacies of love and heartbreak, and life-and-death dramas that rival his own. Well-paced and expertly plotted, Mother Blues dives deep into the well of human emotions as the characters fight to right their journeys after life’s storms have blown them off course. Filled with elements of mystery, mysticism and redemption, Thomas’ poignant prose exalts life—a long, old road that is best traveled with a grateful heart and a pocket full of blues.

Mother Blues has received positive reviews from some of the most well-renowned celebrities, authors, and reviewers around the world. Actor and author, Mariel Hemingway, said, “Mother Blues is a soulful, exciting read that will stay with you for a while. This rollicking saga unspools a rich, dramatic tapestry, brimming with unforgettable characters: some battered and broken; others heroic and inspiring; some so evil your blood will boil, and still others so decent your heart will ache.”

A compelling story you won’t soon forget, Mother Blues is available for sale on Amazon and other online bookstores.
